During season 8, Angel Batista wasn’t always played by David Zayas. His son, David Zayas Jr., stands in for his father in some scenes, as the two look remarkably alike. Dexter has a large scar on his left side, which is visible throughout the first season. Later, in season 2, the scar has moved to his right side, leaving his left side unmarked. Dexter creates a believable and very detailed portrait of a troubled sociopath, shall we say. One of the parts of the show that I like the most is the emotions that normal people show, which forces Dexter to imitate them. Good laughs when Dexter’s fake emotions become real and he is scared, like in his relationship with his « girlfriend » Rita, a mother of two and the victim of her abusive ex-boyfriend. I also liked Jennifer Carpenter’s performance as Dexter’s sister Debra. It adds a nice color to the show without falling into clichés. A thrilling story, lots of details and one of the best opening episodes ever.
